In much of Canada, a fall day can cover two seasons. You leave home in a frosty morning, sit in a warm office or car, and walk back out into a mild afternoon. Dressing for only one of those moments means being cold or overheated for the rest. Layering solves that, and it is easier than it looks once you follow a simple system.
The three-layer system
Think of every fall outfit as three layers, each with its own job. You add or remove them as the temperature changes.
Layer 1: The base
This is the layer against your skin. It should be thin, smooth and comfortable enough to wear on its own if the day warms up. Good choices are fine knit tops, ribbed long-sleeve tops and light turtlenecks. The Isla Seam-Detail Ribbed Long Sleeve Top and the Yolande Waffle Knit Long Sleeve Top are easy bases. Browse all tops.
Tip: a sleeveless knit top works well under a cardigan when you know the day will be warm, but choose sleeves when you plan to add a coat so the lining does not rub your arms.
Layer 2: The warmth layer
This is where most of your warmth comes from: a cardigan, a sweater or a knit vest. Cardigans are the most flexible because you can open, close or remove them without changing your whole outfit. An open-front waffle knit like the Andrea Waffle Knit Open Front Cardigan works over almost anything. See all cardigans and sweaters and knits.
Layer 3: The outer layer
The outer layer protects you from wind and cold. In early fall, a vest, shacket or light jacket is often enough. Later in the season, switch to a mid-weight coat. A quilted vest such as the Pia Cable Knit Quilted Puffer Vest keeps your core warm while leaving your arms free, and a teddy fleece shacket like the Halina Teddy Fleece Button-Front Shacket feels like a cozy jacket. How to layer without looking bulky
- Thin to thick: always place the thinnest piece closest to your body and the chunkiest on the outside.
- Stagger the lengths: a base top that is slightly shorter than the cardigan, and a cardigan that is shorter than the coat, looks deliberate. Duster cardigans are the exception and look best under a cropped jacket or on their own.
- Balance the volume: if your top half is layered and chunky, keep your pants slimmer or straight. If you wear wide-leg pants, choose neater knits.
- Stick to two or three colours: tonal layers in cream, camel and brown look calm and expensive. Too many colours can look busy.
- Watch the sleeves: thick knit sleeves under a slim coat sleeve are uncomfortable. Choose fine knits under fitted coats.
Layered fall outfit formulas
- Frosty morning, sunny afternoon: ribbed long-sleeve top + open-front cardigan + quilted vest + straight jeans + ankle boots.
- Office day: fine knit top + button-front cardigan + wide-leg trousers + mid-weight coat. More ideas in our fall work outfits guide.
- Weekend walk: waffle knit top + teddy fleece shacket + blanket scarf + lug-sole ankle boots.
- Dress layering: sweater dress + duster cardigan + knee-high boots. See how to style a sweater dress.
Do not forget accessories
A scarf is the easiest layer of all. It adds a lot of warmth for its size and folds into a bag when you do not need it. A wool-blend scarf or a large plaid blanket scarf can also double as a wrap indoors. Browse our accessories.
Frequently asked questions
How many layers should I wear in fall?
Two to three layers is usually enough: a base top, a warmth layer such as a cardigan or sweater, and an outer layer such as a vest, jacket or coat. Add a scarf on colder days.
What is the best fall layering piece?
A cardigan. It adds warmth, can be removed without changing your outfit and works with pants, jeans, skirts and dresses.
How do I layer a cardigan under a coat?
Choose a cardigan that is thinner and slightly shorter than your coat, and make sure the coat sleeves have enough room for the knit underneath.
Is a vest warm enough for fall?
On mild fall days, yes. A quilted vest keeps your core warm, and paired with a sweater it is often enough until late October in many parts of Canada.
